Major Shaitan: A Braveheart

1962: The India-China War and the Battle of Rezang La
The year 1962 was a dark chapter in India’s history, as the country was caught off guard by a sudden Chinese invasion. In this backdrop, Rezang La, a strategic pass in the Chushul sector of Ladakh, became the battleground for one of the most heroic last stands in military history.
Major Shaitan Singh, then commanding the 13 Kumaon Regiment’s Charlie Company, was tasked with defending Rezang La. Positioned at a staggering altitude of 16,000 feet, his 120 soldiers faced an overwhelming force of over 5,000 Chinese troops. Despite the odds, the retreat was never an option.

The Fight to the Last Man and Last Bullet
On the morning of 18 November 1962, the Chinese launched a massive assault, combining artillery and infantry attacks. The thin air and freezing temperatures added to the challenges. Yet, the soldiers of Charlie Company stood their ground under Major Shaitan Singh’s indomitable leadership.
He inspired his men to fight with grit and determination, often moving from bunker to bunker under heavy fire to motivate his troops. The Kumaonis used everything at their disposal—rifles, grenades, and even bayonets—to repel wave after wave of Chinese attacks.

Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Indian soldiers inflicted devastating losses on the Chinese. Over 1,300 Chinese soldiers were killed, but the defenders were slowly overwhelmed.
Even after being severely wounded, Major Shaitan refused to abandon his post. He ordered his men to carry on the fight while he continued to lead from the front. Eventually, he succumbed to his injuries, but not before ensuring that his soldiers upheld the honor of the Indian Army.
The Aftermath: A Glorious Sacrifice
When the battle ended, 114 out of 120 soldiers of Charlie Company were martyred, but they had achieved the unimaginable. Their bravery ensured that Rezang La was not breached, and their sacrifice inspired an entire nation.
Major Shaitan Singh’s body was later found at the same spot where he had fought till his last breath, clutching his weapon. His gallantry and leadership became the stuff of legends.
The Nation’s Gratitude: Param Vir Chakra
For his unparalleled courage and leadership, Major Shaitan Singh was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military honor. The official citation praised his “undaunted bravery, inspiring leadership, and supreme sacrifice.”
Rezang La Memorial: Remembering the Heroes
To honor Major Singh and the men of Charlie Company, a memorial was built at Rezang La. The inscription on the memorial aptly captures the spirit of their sacrifice:
“How can a man die better,
Than facing fearful odds,
For the ashes of his fathers,
And the temples of his gods.”
